FOUR Comic
Books
The Fantastic
Four are considered the rocket that launched the re-birth
of Marvel Comics. Back in 1961, DC Comics was enjoying
super sized ratings from fans, for its lead comic book about
a team of super heroes. Marvel had nothing like it, and so the
task was laid on the desk of their own super hero creator, Stan
Lee.
What he came up with, resulted in a run of more
than forty years for the Fantastic Four comic books,
following the trials and tribulations of what has been referred
to as the first "real" team of superheroes that acted
like they were human at any time in their lives; fighting, arguing,
making up, and standing up for each other.
The Fantastic Four consists of Reed Richards,
whose dreams of building a space vessel, were laughingly supported
by his friend, Ben Grimm, who promised to be his co-pilot. Add
in Richards' girlfriend Sue Storm, and her younger brother Johnny,
and Marvel had the matrix for the Fantastic Four comics.
Richards rushed his test launch of the vessel,
with his friends along for the ride. His plans to head for another
planet had to be abandoned when they ran into a solar flare
that jacked up the cosmic rays, irradiating the ship and its
passengers. By the time they landed, they had morphed into the
Fantastic Four characters, with Reed becoming the elastic Mr.
Fantastic, Sue turning into Invisible Girl, Johnny becoming
the Human Torch who spouted flaming plasma at will, and Ben
having turned into The Thing- a bulging, muscled mass of orange-colored
empathy.
Unlike other series, the heroes of the Fantastic
Four comic books have no alter egos or secret identities, and
didn't even have costumes for the first two issues. And while
they did don identifying garb, they never lost that united family
front, to conquer evil. Reed even married Susan Storm, and had
two children who now appear in some of the stories.
