FOR PUNISHER COMIC BOOKS
The Punisher was an anomaly in the world of super heroes when
he first appeared in 1974. While fighting on the side of good,
totally dedicated to waging war on crime and corruption, he
never hesitated to kill, to achieve what he saw as a positive
outcome.
When the Punisher first appeared in comic books,
it was in a supporting role, as was common for new characters.
Frank Castle, once a career marine, was now the most dangerous
of mercenaries, having turned his strength and talents to wiping
out public enemies, after his wife and children were killed
in the crossfire between two gangs of drug dealers.
With his Marine skills honed in Viet Nam, and
his Navy SEAL training, the Punisher specialized in using only
his basic talents, along with an assortment of specially adapted
weaponry, to wage his personal war of revenge.
Easily recognized for the white skull on the chest
of his dark costume, The Punisher comic books evolved from the
fans' interest in a super hero who "crossed the line"
in behavior, and who had no alter ego, nor super powers.
The Punisher was essentially the first of a genre
of super heroes, ones with psychological problems that often
complicated or impeded their performance. At the height of his
popularity, The Punisher comic books were one of the favorites
of those who took to this new humanistic view of crime fighters.
He starred in a number of monthly series comics, and while the
phenomenon wore off after a while, remains a staple character
of Marvel comics, partly because he has no ultimate villain
to conquer or kill, but pursues every opportunity to crush evil
that presents itself
