FOR MIGHTY THOR COMIC BOOKS
The Mighty Thor is one of Marvel comic books first and
most enduring heroes, and like so many others, came from the
creative mind of Stan Lee. He was tinkering with a character
idea, and sent all his ideas off to writer Larry Lieber. The
five-page story appeared in Marvel's Journey Into Mystery fantasy
series in 1963.
Lieber, building on Lee's concept, had created
a super-hero based on the ancient Norse god Thor, but
with a modern, alter ego. Banished to Earth by his father Odin,
Thor is left to cope as a human, with no memory of his powers.
He becomes Dr. Donald Blake, who is eventually drawn by an unseen
force to Norway, where he becomes involved in an alien invasion,
and stumbles across a walking stick that when tapped on the
ground, becomes a magic hammer, and transforms him into Thor,
super-hero. He defeats the aliens with his newfound powers and
becomes a member of the Avengers, but struggles constantly against
his duty to a troubled America, and the call of his homeland.
The character of Thor became an immediate hit,
and while it didn't bear the name Thor Comics, the Journey
Into Mystery rapidly turned into his personal showcase.
Stories leaped from a five-page featurette, to the full 20-page
treatment by 1968, and finally the magazine turned into Thor
comic books.
The 1990s upheaval in which Marvel outsourced
many of their titles to former employees' new companies, saw
Thor comic books come to an end, and the magazine reverting
to its original title in 1996. In 1998 Thor comics reappeared
for a run that lasted until 2004 and his death, after which
he has continued as a feature character in miniseries.
And in 2007, Thor has returned in his own series,
simply titled 'Thor'.
