All good things have to start somewhere, and while comic books
already existed, they were literally re-born in 1938, with the
publication of Action Comics, the vehicle that introduced
Superman to the public.
Originally, Action Comics was an anthology
type publication, featuring various characters in short stories.
And while the overwhelming popularity of Superman would
spawn his own series of comic books the next year, he continued
to appear in the anthology, sometimes as just a two-page featurette.
Other characters who shared the pages of Action
Comics, were Tex Thompson who would become The Americommando,
the magician Zatara, and a humorous series revolving
around Henry Hayfoot, a policeman.
The publishing company started out as Detective
Comics Inc., then became National Comics, and National
Periodical Publications before merging into DC Comics
in 1945, with Action Comics as its premier production. But they
were reluctant to raise the ten cent price of the books, and
began reducing the number of stories. Still, new characters
continued to emerge, and with the introduction of Supergirl
in 1959, they had to move out on their own to other titles,
and Action Comics became the main pipeline for delivering the
Superman title to its readers.
Today, Action Comics is still primarily
the territory of Superman, with the occasional appearance of
another short story or two. It is the second longest series
of comic books, with more than 800 issues, partly due to a brief
stint in 1988-1989 when it tried a weekly format.
