HULK Comic Books
Mentally unstable and jealous of his wife's relationship with
their child, Robert Banner's father ended up murdering her,
leaving Robert to be raised by relatives, and to internalize
all the rage and resentment of his childhood, which would eventually
emerge in the Incredible Hulk's personalities.
As an adult, Banner went to work on a secret nuclear
test project for a bomb with gamma radiation. About to test
the new bomb, he spots a teenager who has wandered into the
test range and rushes out to save him. But a co-worker who is
really a Soviet spy, detonates the bomb while he is out there,
causing Banner to suffer massive irradiation that immediately
turned him into the Incredible Hulk, a bumbling, angry creature
with a native intelligence. Banner would morph into the Hulk
at sunset, and back to a human at dawn.
In the Incredible
Hulk comics' first edition in 1962, he was gray. But
the printer had difficulty coming up with a consistent color,
so in the second issue, his color was changed to green, and
the storyline expanded to include the fact that instead of just
the day/night transformation, he now changed under stress and
the influence of adrenaline, which produced a green color.
Because of Banner could not control his alter-ego
as the Incredibly Hulk, scientists devised a way to separate
their psyches. But after the splitting of their personalities,
it was discovered that both the Hulk and Banner were dying.
New technology was developed to merge the two once more, ensuring
the continued long life of Banner, and the success of the Incredible
Hulk comic book.
