FOR MOON KNIGHT COMIC BOOKS
When it comes to super-heroes, the focal character is usually
endowed with supernatural powers of one kind or another. The
fact that Moon Knight possessed only his native intelligence
and perception, as well as his physical skills and training
as a mercenary, led to the sometimes disparaging nickname of
"the poor man's Batman". But there is a vast difference
in their characters.
For one, the Moon Knight comic books' hero has
not one, but three alter egos: Mark Spector, Jake Lockley, and
Steven Grant, each of which has very unique personalities, habits,
and modes of thinking. While it's certainly one way to give
more depth to the character of Moon Knight, it also adds a note
of mystery, since it seems there is never any proof that all
his personas know about the others. Add to that, the fact that
they are all forceful and demanding characters, and you literally
have a whole team of super-heroes in one man.
Moon Knight comics were spawned from the birth
of this relatively new entry in the Marvel line of creative
works, way back in 1975. In a move similar to the introduction
of other stars, Moon Knight appeared in supporting roles within
other lines, including The Hulk. Eventually, Marvel produced
three full series of Moon Knight comic books, as well as a number
of mini-series.
In the early 1980s, Marvel Comics dabbled in the
somewhat new market for direct sales to specialty outlets, and
took three of their titles: Ka-Zar, The Micronauts and Moon
Knight, and stepped outside the Comics Authority Code by ramping
up their adult material, and selling them by subscription and
specialty stores.
The Moon Knight character was killed off in 1994,
but enjoyed a revival in 2006 with more attention to the facets
of his various characters.
