Marvel sometimes trips over itself when inventing characters
like Ms.
Marvel, who take on a persona and role of their own,
only to end up having someone else use the name as well, thus
confusing loyal fans.
A lesser-known member of the Fantastic Four,
Sharon Ventura first appeared in 1985, long after the "real"
Ms. Marvel. Sharon was strictly a supporting player,
and was never the main character of the Ms. Marvel comic
books. A talented and physically superb specimen, she became
a professional wrestler, breaking away from the evil influences
of the sport to use her prowess under the name of Ms. Marvel.
However, in a 1988 edition, she underwent a mutation similar
to Ben Grimm's, and began calling herself the She-Thing.
The character more familiarly known as Ms.
Marvel, is actually Carol Danvers, who made her debut
in 1968. An Air Force pilot, she eventually joined the CIA,
and filled a purely human role, while brushing shoulders with
other Marvel characters, and becoming a love interest of Captain
Marvel, who would be the reason for her becoming Ms.
Marvel.
The Captain's Kree race had invented a device,
which when turned on Carol, altered her DNA to resemble theirs,
and gave her super human strengths, including a seventh sense.
For there, she became a focal character of her own, appearing
in her own Ms. Marvel comic books up until 1990, when
she was once more relegated to a supporting role for the Avengers. In
2006 she once again got her own series and became a big part
of Tony Starks' Civil War with the Mighty Avengers vs New Avengers.
