The move to the Ultimate Spider-Man and other updates, was to attract new and younger readers who would not be familiar with the characters' origins, and not steeped in the continuity of the stories. Backgrounds were altered and made more relevant to modern times, as well as re-written so that heroes like Ultimate Spider-Man came from more familiar origins, and were involved in activities that current readers would find interesting. A previous attempt to ramp up the character's popularity, failed miserably with SpiderMan: Chapter One, a limited series that died a quick death after only a few months. John Byrne, who wrote and illustrated the 13 installments, had taken his remaking of the character too far, and fans protested in legions, and plummeting sales. So there were no great expectations when Ultimate Spider-Man comics debuted in 2000, even though great care had been taken to retain the integrity of the character, while enhancing his personality and bringing him into the 21st century. To everyone's surprise, The Ultimate Spider-Man comic book title became a significant commercial success, rising above Marvel's traditional series, the Amazing Spider-Man in sales.
