The move to the Ultimate X-Men took place in 2001, spearheaded by writer Mark Millar, with the artwork of Adam Kurbert. The original series and characters continue in the Marvel Universe, but the Ultimate X-men comic books are a physical and creative revamping of the characters, and the nature of their existence. In the first series, the Uncanny X-Men, Professor Xavier, himself a mutant with superhuman powers, decides to found a school where instead of struggling to cope with their abilities, young mutants can learn to fine-tune their powers for the good of all mankind. He begins to gather young students, who live in his mansion/school, and study under his tutoring. The five founding members were Cyclops, Iceman, the Angel, the Beast and Marvel Girl. These and other subsequent members would become the Ultimate X-Men, along with the professor. In the latter series of the Ultimate X-Men comic books, made the mutants publicly known to the world, as opposed to holding secret identities and roles. They also existed in a realm that was much harsher and darker of purpose than the first stories. The creators have also taken the Ultimate X-Men back to their teenage years, which is where the original series began. Over the last several years, the success of the Ultimate X-Men comic books has been apparent in sales figures, with Ultimate X-Men outselling The Uncanny X-Men, many times since 2001.
