FOR X-FACTOR COMIC BOOKS
X-Factor
comic books
were yet another spin-off of a popular Marvel comic books series,
the X-Men, which spawned a number of associated characters and
storylines. The X-Factor comics that were published from 1986-1998,
featured the original cast of the X-Men.
In
the beginning, a superhuman mutant named Professor Xavier, established
a school where he could provide scholastic and personal training
for adolescent mutant superhumans. Under his tutelage, they
would learn to control their powers and use them for the good
of mankind, even though normal humans feared them. The five
initial students who would one day become the X-Factor team,
were the mainstay of the X-Men series for many years. Then a
story arc was developed that involved the possibility of their
deaths, and Professor X as he was known, establishing a new
X-Men team, with the first characters breaking away from the
path the second team was following.
Hence,
Cyclops, the Angel, the Beast, Marvel Girl and the Iceman were
free to take up new careers in the X-Factor comic books. Now
they were a private institution funded and run by industrialist
Warren Worthington (the Angel), for the sole purpose of identifying
and ridding the world of superhuman mutants, which had become
more and more feared by the general population. In reality,
X-Factor was seeking out the mutants to help them in the same
way that they had been aided, with skills training and a secure
environment, safe from normal humans.
In
1991, the X-Factor comics took a major turn, when the original
five characters were reunited with the X-Men series, and a second
team of X-Factor members were created from supporting characters
that had already appeared in the X-Men series.
After
a long hiatus, the X-Factor comic books were revived in 2005
as the new X-Factor Investigations, a detective agency with
some superhuman employees.
