It is the DC in DC Comic Books; its parent company and publisher. As the original company Detective Comics Inc., they also published Action Comics which has produced more issues, but only because it published as a weekly, for some time. The Detective comic books first appeared in 1937, as a response to reader demand for stories about those hard-boiled, fedora-wearing detectives. It was originally structured as an anthology, featuring a variety of characters and storylines, and launching individual careers for such characters as Batman, who was the premiere star of Detective Comics for a number of years. Development of the Batman character in Detective Comics, is credited with the rage for super-heroes with sidekicks, which lasted for several decades thereafter, and was imitated by numerous other comic book creators. With a fan base that never wavered, sales of Detective Comics remained strong as they moved into the 1980s, and introduced a number of regular individual series within the issues, and added vignettes like "Tales of Gotham City", which followed the lives of regular citizens.
