Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid) is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroxine and iodothyronine hormones.

Causes of hyperthyroidism

  • Thyroiditis occurs when thyroid hormones are produced in excess and leak into the bloodstream. It is usually painless, except in the subacute form.
  • There is a lump on the thyroid gland. It is more common in the elderly. It is a lump that grows on the thyroid gland. This lump is often the cause of the thyroid gland working too hard.
  • Graves’ Disease is a genetic disease that causes an abnormal secretion of the hormone tyrosine. It usually affects teenage to middle-aged women and smokers.
  • Taking medications that contain iodine, such as amiodarone, which is used to treat patients with arrhythmias.
  • Eating foods that contain too much iodine

Complications of hyperthyroidism

  • There is a problem of brittle bones. Because the body has too much thyroid hormone, which causes abnormal calcium absorption in the bones, resulting in osteoporosis .
  • Vision problems such as red eyes, dry eyes, watery eyes, and sensitivity to light, etc. These problems are often found in patients with Graves’ disease, which is caused by hyperthyroidism.
  • Hypothyroidism due to treatment of hyperthyroidism. Which results in lower than normal thyroid hormone levels.
  • Hyperthyroidism can occur due to several factors, such as thyroid damage, infection, pregnancy, etc. It is a life-threatening condition and patients should see a doctor immediately for treatment.

Diagnosis of hyperthyroidism

  • Thyroid Scan
  • Measure thyroid hormone levels and pituitary gland function

Treatment of hyperthyroidism

  • Taking antithyroid drugs such as methimazole, propylthiouracil, etc.
  • Take radioactive iodine. This treatment method is use for patients over 60 years of age.
  • Beta-blockers are use to relieve palpitations or slow the heart rate.
  • Thyroidectomy: In cases where patients cannot treat with drugs or radioactive iodine, such as pregnant patients. After surgery, hormone control medication must taken for the rest of their lives.

Prevention of hyperthyroidism

  • Observe any abnormalities in the body
  • No smoking
  • If you experience any abnormal symptoms, you should see a doctor for examination and treatment.
  • If a patient has treat for hyperthyroidism. Long-term follow-up with blood tests is necessary to prevent recurrence of hyperthyroidism.
